QR Codes for the Classroom

QR Codes are a quick and easy way for students to access information. Watch this video of 4th grade students at Welcome Elementary as they use QR codes for math and behavior incentives.  QR Code Video

Here is a handout about how to create QR Codes while you are using Mozilla Firefox.  QR Code Generator for FireFox

You can also create QR Codes for text, phone numbers, urls, facebook, etc.. using the website. www.qrcode.kaywa.com

Click more on the page and it will give you the option to add text.  The 4th graders wrote their math problems, typed the answers in the text box and created a QR Code for their answers.  Students from their class and other classes could scan the QR codes when they walked down the hall past their bulletin board to see the correct answer to the word problems.

Here is a fantastic resource for you to learn more about how to use QR Codes by Kathy Schrock.

Embracing Technology for 2013-2014 School Year

Planning professional development for the upcoming school year is the focus of this blog post.

First of all,  I’d like to encourage schools in our district to better utilize the awesome technology that we already have in place. Many schools have 4-5 laptops in a classroom, computer labs, laptop carts, teacher ipads, activexpressions.

In some of the schools last year, they had 5 nice laptops tethered to a wall in the back of the rooms.

Suggestion:  Put the students in groups and get the laptops away from the wall.  Give a laptop to each team. Discuss the importance of collaboration and assign job roles. Use www.sweetsearch.com or http:scdiscus.org or www.instagrok.com to research topics from science or social studies. Make an online workstation or journal and write about findings.

Create a series of workshops about how to use computer stations for research, informational writing. math games, and literacy centers.

Make videos of student learning, upload to schooltube and make a QR Code for the video. Post it in the parent newsletter and on classroom doors.

Stress the importance of using the laptop cart and the labs for simple projects such as inserting clipart and pictures in Word and writing about science topics in first grade.

Show websites like www.ixl.com for math drills and www.abcya.com for word clouds, games, and paint type activities to illustrate student understanding.

For grades 2-5 use the laptop carts and labs for Edmodo and Web 2.0 tools.

For the one iPad classroom, Allan November talks about the power of students teaching others using screen casting apps and publishing for a global audience. This picture captures why students need to use screen-casting apps.

Teachers need to know how to post videos or links to videos on their blogs/websites so students can publish their work for a global audience.

Many schools have Activexpressions that are being under utilized. In my opinion, this simple hand held tool can change the classroom environment immediately. Demonstrate how to use the question generator and self-paced questions for activexpressions to gather information and track progress. The next and most important step is to plan instruction based on the results of the quizzes.

Reading this post on twitter this morning validated the role of Instructional Technology.  We are striving to provide meaningful professional development for teachers that focus on student-centered learning.  This begins by creating a shared vision between our staff, administrators, instructional coaches, teachers, support staff, students, parents and community.

How will we provide PD that focuses on Common Core standards?
What technology projects could we integrate that will support higher level thinking?

I found this summer at UTC13 and ISTE that my favorite workshops were those that were designed with the goal of networking with others.  Sharing ideas, best practices, sample lessons, classroom management tips, online resources, and logistics of projects provided the most meaningful PD over the “sit and get” lecture type classes.

What constitutes good PD for you, your school, your district?

Lessons Learned at ISTE 13

How can I process all the great ideas I gleaned from ISTE 13?  I’ll begin with the highlights of my trip:  Meeting Alan November
and getting to see Kathy Schrock’s presentation about teaching with iPads. I was encouraged by Alan November’s way of thinking about student learning and felt affirmed as we share the same vision. His presentation motivated and inspired me to encourage teachers to post their students’ projects and screen recordings on their blogs and possibly on iTunes U for a global audience to see and learn from. Thoughts to ponder:

  • Teachers should talk less and listen more.
  • Students should create videos to teach students.
  • Unlearn locus of control.
  • Teachers who want to control entire curriculum every day, let them retire.
  • Who learns the most from creating the videos? The student replied: I do.
  • Make tutorials for homework instead of a quick 7 minute check off.

I was thrilled that I was able to present how the 1:1 iPad Initiative at Welcome Elementary School transformed learning at the SIGTE Playground.  I found that I enjoyed the attending the playground sessions much more than the regular conference type classroom setting.  I was able to walk around and hear fantastic teachers tell how they are using technology, see examples of student projects’ and hear a variety of presentations in a short amount of time. Some of the sessions that I enjoyed were at the  SIGDS Playground.

It was wonderful listening to Gwynneth Jones share her passion, great ideas,  and view the plethora of workshops on her blog and wiki, thedaringlibrarian, The Apple Distinguished Educator who talked about iTunes U and posting her units of study there for other teachers and students to view encouraged me to do the same with the teachers in GCSD.

The Ignite sessions were inspiring and affirmed my devotion to the teaching profession. Here are a couple of quotes I heard that I loved:  “Adults need to have fun, so children will want to grow up to be one.” Also, “Common core is not in books, it’s how you use the books. High interest trumps reading level every time, ”  by the author Vicki Cobb.

Finally, the closing session of ISTE was amazing with Adam Bellow  You are invited to change the world is a must see video to motivate you as you prepare for the upcoming 2013-2014 school year.

Good luck teachers as you enjoy your time to relax and rejuvenate this summer. You are much appreciated for all you do for your students!
